Welcome to Metal Monday once again. Today we continue our journey along the East coast as part of Atlas of Rock.
For the last two weeks we've been traveling down the East coast, taking a look at bands from Massachusetts and New York. Today we take a look at the rock and metal of the southernmost East Coast state: Florida. When thinking of the most metal states, Florida probably doesn't come to the mind of most people who aren't fans of metal, but to us metalheads it is known as the birth place of death metal.
Before we get into the long list of death metal bands from Florida, let's take a look at the wide range of other rock and metal music that comes from this state.
One of the most well known bands to come out of Florida is the classic southern rock band Lynard Skynard. If you haven't heard of this band before then you must have been living under a rock. Their hit song Freebird is infamous for being requested at every show by every single band ever.
Some big alt-rock bands have come out of Florida as well. Most notably are the bands Creed, Matchbox Twenty, and Dashboard Confessional.
Moving up on the heaviness spectrum, Florida has some great hard rock bands such as Shinedown and the other band of Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti, Alter Bridge.
Florida is also to home of the industrial/alternative metal/shock rock act Marilyn Manson. This dude and his cohorts have been scaring the crap out of people since the 90s.
Speaking of alternative metal genres. The rap metal band Limp Bizkit is also from Florida. [Thanks to Aiden Ryan for pointing this out.]
A few post-hardcore bands come from Florida as well such as metalcore infused Underoath and the more emo style Sleeping With Sirens.
Diving back into some metal, let's talk power metal. Florida is home to big names like Iced Earth, Kamelot, and Savatage.
Florida is also the home of progressive rock/metal band Cynic. It's very hard to describe this band so have a listen for yourself.
One of my favorite metal bands of all time also comes from Florida. That would be Trivium, part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal movement. There's not really a way to describe them other than just metal.
And now for the defining metal genre of Florida. The Florida death metal scene was pioneered by the band Death who are considered the founders of death metal.
But Florida is home to a huge number of death metal bands. A few big names include Obituary, Morbid Angel, Atheist, Deicide, Malevolent Creation, and Six Feet Under.
And that does it for Florida. Take a guess at the next state we visit if you like. Hint: It's not on the East Coast.
Metal Monday is a weekly column by DisturbedShadow on TAY that discusses all things metal. Every Monday morning, we will discuss something metal related and leave you with a playlist to listen to. If it has to do with gaming you'll find it on TAY and if not you can find it over on TAYClassic.
