This week’s recommendation comes from Rathorial. Once More ‘Round the Sun is the sixth album from Georgia progressive sludge metal vets Mastodon, released last year. Much like last week’s feature, Agalloch’s The Serpent and the Sphere, Once More ‘Round the Sun missed my Top 10 Albums of 2014 and was featured in the honorable mentions section.

It was a close call though, and Mastodon almost edged out Hellyeah for the tenth slot.

Once More ‘Round the Sun is another notch in Mastodon’s belt and another great album in their catalog. It has the same sludgey, dirty, crunchy, raw feel as albums such as my personal favorite Mastodon album, 2004’s Leviathan, which I previously featured here, but continues to take things in new directions. My personal favorites off Once More ‘Round the Sun are “The Motherload,” “High Road,” Tread Lightly,” and the title track, “Once More ‘Round the Sun,” but every song is worth checking out.

Album of the Week brings you an album to listen to every week. Maybe a new release, maybe an old favorite. My tastes range from alt-rock to technical death metal and everything in between, but if there’s something else you want to hear, be sure to leave your suggestions! Check out last week’s album!
