This week's Atlas of Rock visited the northern nation of Finland, one of the most metal places on Earth, so for this week's album I chose one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite Finnish metal bands. Follow the Reaper is the third album from the melodic death metal band Children of Bodom and is praised by fans as one of their best works, and for good reason.

Follow the Reaper boasts some of Bodom's best tracks such as "Everytime I Die," "Bodom After Midnight," "Children of Decadence," "Hate Me!," and the title track "Follow the Reaper." But what makes these songs and the rest of the album so good? The musicianship is just top level stuff from CoB. Guitarists Alexi Laiho and Alexnder Kuoppala just shred through this album with crunchy and heavy riffs and amazing melodic solos, melodies, and harmonies. The dual lead harmonization on tracks such as "Follow the Reaper" and "Everytime I Die" are to die for. And layered into this melodic beauty is the keyboard work of Janne Wirman. Whether it's adding another layer of melodies to the mix on tracks such as "Everytime I Die" and "Mask of Sanity," just atmospheric ambiance, or one of Children of Bodom's signature keyboard solos, is guaranteed to be amazing keyboard work. Meanwhile in the rhythm section, Bassist Henkka Seppälä's playing is turned up nice and loud so you can hear his pulverizing bass lines that more often than not don't just follow along with the guitars. He always seems to be doing something different and interesting. Drummer Jaska Raatikainen is a beast behind the kit. He plays amazingly fast and moves all over the kit with interesting drum lines and fills. And on vocals, Alexi Laiho is giving one of his best performances. His screams and growls are top notch on this melodeath masterpiece.

I absolutely love this album and would recommend it to anyone looking to get into melodic death metal. Take a listen below!
